CFMC Welcomes New Board Members

The Community Foundation for Monterey County (CFMC) announced the addition of five new members to their board of directors. The new board members are: Michael Reid, Loren Steck, Abby Taylor-Silva, Jan Vanderbilt and Maija D. West.

Michael Reed CFMC BoardmemberMichael Reid, of Monterey, is an Episcopal priest, published author and co-founder of the Fund for Homeless Women of the Community Foundation for Monterey County. Originally from Brooklyn NY, he served 10 years as a nonprofit leader in Los Angeles before moving to the Monterey Peninsula in 2001 to work at York School as Director of Development and Public Relations. He went on to seminary school, then six years of parish ministry at St. Mary’s by the Sea Episcopal Church in Pacific Grove. Reid received an EdD from Temple University, MDiv from the Church Divinity School of the Pacific, MA from NYU, and BA from Adelphi University.

Loren Steck CFMC Board MemeberLoren Steck, of Carmel Valley, is a retired psychologist, whose career was spent primarily as a consultant in the entertainment industry. Steck has a PhD in psychology from University of California, Los Angeles. He graduated from the University of California, Santa Cruz in 1973 and has continued a connection with the school, including serving as the President of its Alumni in Association, 10 years as chair of the UCSC Foundation’s Investment and Finance Committee, and 16 years as a member of the faculty. Steck is a member of the Governing Board of Trustees at Monterey Peninsula College and has also served on the boards of Community Human Services, the Carmel Valley Association, the Carmel Valley Forum and the Carmel Red Cross.

Abby Taylor-Silva CFMC Board Member

 Abby Taylor-Silva, a native of Monterey and San Benito counties, is Vice President, Policy and Communications at the Grower-Shipper Association of Central California. She has deep roots in agriculture, with her family having farmed and ranched in Monterey County for more than 50 years. She was named Assembly District 30 Woman of the Year for 2015, is past Executive Director of Ag Against Hunger, Past President of California Women for Agriculture’s (CWA) Salinas Valley Chapter, past Executive Board Member to the Salinas Valley Chamber of Commerce, Vice President of the Salinas City Schools Foundation and a member of the Rotary Club of Salinas. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from UC Davis, where she also minored in Agricultural and Managerial Economics.

Jan Vanderbilt, of Carmel Valley, is a Certified Public Accountant and President and Chief Executive Officer of Vanderbilt CPAs. Vanderbilt has worked as a CPA on the Monterey Peninsula for more than 30 years, specializing in consulting, planning, accounting, and other tax services for businesses, individuals, estates and trusts. She is a graduate of Golden Gate University, where she earned a Master of Science in Finance degree. Vanderbilt serves on the boards of the Monterey Peninsula College Foundation and the CPE Forum of the Central Coast.

Maria West, CFMC Board MemberMaija D. West, of Carmel Valley, is a business attorney and owner of the Law Office of Maija West. Her pro bono work is dedicated to those who want to use a reconciliation framework for social change. West currently serves on the board of the Monterey County Rape Crisis Center and served in the past on the Taos Community Foundation board. West is the Vice Chair of the Women’s Leadership Council for the Women’s Fund of CFMC. She is a graduate of the University of California, Santa Cruz and the University of New Mexico School of Law.
